Hi Neil, Im a final year architecture student from the U.K and Ive been following crowdsource placemaking to which it has inspired me to base my dissertation on the topic. You have a presentation on vimeo that explains the Bristol, Connecticut proposal. I'm sorry to say that this article shows a lack of understanding of its subject matter. This particular street in Brussels is full of mediocre restaurants geared only to tourists. It's avoided like the plague by locals and actually sucks real street life out of the city centre. Rather than serving as an example of good street life, it illustrates the dangers of Disneyfication in old European historic centres.

Interesting but that photo and Urban Fare is near where I live. This is a "hybid" type of market. It has a deli and area where people can chill on couches. It's essentially like a Starbucks built into a grocery store. The bonus is that you can order hot food also. So this is far more than just a simply grocery store concept. If you walk about 4 blocks from this one, you will find a Nesters which copies the urban concept. Get people from the neighborhood to stay a bit longer. Dare I say it can be trendy hanging out at a grocery store? Well that's the market (no pun intended) these grocery stores are aiming for.

Have you got any data for this preference? Because I only see ever-dominant chain stores (have you checked out share of the UK grocery market held by Tesco, or the combined major supermarkets?), empty city-centre flats built during the 2000s construction boom, high street retailers struggling against online retailing and traffic levels that despite sky high fuel prices are showing no sign of abating.

Conversely I see major resistance from volume housebuilders against high density planning policies and towards freeing up greenfield sites to build low density ex-urbs. I see street markets enduring simply because they are cheaper than shops that have to pay rent and rates.

Outdoor dining is popular only because of the smoking ban. Although I may want to sit outside when eating or drinking, I can't because I'm now surrounded by smokers. I'm sure everyone else inside the restaurant/cafe/bar feels exactly the same.

The only evidence I've seen that backs up any of your claims is around increased audiences at live music - but that's coupled with decreasing sales of recorded music. If you push this to its extremes this may mean rapidly increasing ticket prices as major labels and greedy artists struggle to compensate for lost revenue, but ultimately fewer major names and albums as music becomes more localised. Possibly.

I can't wait to feature Give a Minute as part of the crowdsourced placemaking field, though I'm waiting for word on how the ideas will formally be implemented. There's Mind Mixer, User Voice, Change By Us and other idea generating services, but the key is how will the results be implemented in a less than vague plan.

It's interesting to see how people gather and share their ideas for the benefit of their own community. Another great initiative for a city is Give a Minute. Give a Minute, a campaign created by advocacy group CEOs for Cities and media design firm Local Projects, which looks to take public dialogue out of town meetings and into the streets. Thanks for the reference Adam. On paper it sounds fantastic, though if you take the virtual tour you can see the daylighted creek is treated more as a feature of a shopping mall lined with national chain stores than a wildlife habitat.it's more of a corporate cultural district with a predominant focus on chains and luxury housing, but it does provide a largely car-free urban district in the downtown, and that's a major plus.

Sizing Down Grocery Stores

One of my fondest memories is shopping for groceries in Provence, France. There was NO supermarket. As I walked home from the commuter train after a day of researching through dusty books with my then doctoral candidate daughter, we would stop at shops to pick up the fixings for dinner. We purchased a rÃ´tissez le poulet (roast chicken) from one small spot; stopped at the boulangerie for a baguette; and topped it all off with a bottle of wine. An added treat was the fresh produce brought into the city that morning from the countryside. I didn"t know asparagus could taste that good but I digress.

As I was reading this blog about downsizing the grocery stores I couldn"t help but reminisce. I would dearly love to live in a neighborhood in which this set up of small shops selling all things fresh and healthy was a walk from my house to the commuter train or better yet to my walkable place of employment. A vision of this type of neighborhood spurred my husband and I to start Bronzeville Urban Green (B.U.G). We realize that not only urban settings are conducive to this model. However, recently we started working with another Chicago group attempting to address food deserts in Chicago"s least economically stable communities. They will be launching Fresh Moves, a mobile market bringing fresh produce to the inner city. Who knows maybe by combining their ideas and our arduous task of turning an abandoned rail embankment to 1.5 miles of greenhouses will bring the flavor of Provence along with good food to the urban food deserts. Stay tuned.
